CONSTRUCTION: FILMING CASINO SCENE

CONSTRUCTION: CASINO SCENE, FILMING

Thursday 25th November

Location: School

Room: Drawing Room

This was the only scene we filmed with more than one/two people in the scene. We sent out our call sheets to all the member of the cast who where in this scene, so everyone was aware of the timings and scenes.

I framed the shot where the extras, where centred more to the right hand side of the frame, and the main character (Tom), enters the room form the far right hand corner. Him entering after/later than everyone else suggests that he he does not fit into this social group. And that the corporate employees who are already sat professionally at the table do not respect or appreciate Tom. This is this last chance for him to gain any, sort of purpose for his life and future. And with his facial expressions, and camera movements/angles the audiences sees just how anxious and frustrated he is about this game.

CONSTRUCTION: FILMING / MONEY DEAL SCENE

Construction: Money deal scene

This is one of the final scenes we shot. It involved the one glimpse of hope the audience encounters in the trailer. Where the protagonist of out trailer/film is handed an important envelope filled with money inside of it, that he takes and runs away with it. I framed the shot where the camera is above Tom (the main character), so connote that I am the bigger/inferior person compared to him, who now has very little in his life. This shoot was successful, we filmed the shoots a few times though, so that I found the right angle with Tom in the frame. And the location of the house/mini huts where also a good location (from the location recce) that we used for when he realises he had been ‘kicked out of his house’ because he did not pay his rent on time.

PLANNING: INSPIRATION + SCRIPT WRITING

Thursday 18th November

PLANNING: INSPIRATION + PLANNING

Before writing our script we decided to watch scenes from poker games in films and tv shows such as: How I Met Your Mother, Gilmore Girls & Casino Royale. In many of the scenes, like Casino Royale for example: we watched it three/four times and noticed that many of the casino scenes in the episodes or movies had short (one word) dialogue, with turn-taking between the dealer and the player of the game (or other players involved).

In this lesson myself and Tom wrote and finalised our script using the platform Celtx to write casino dialogue scene, in our film trailer. We discussed that the dialogue is short would be the best option as in the trailers we watched the dialogue was dropped in the scenes. A drip effect, is used in many of the trailers we watched where dialogue is heard. The most powerful and important lines from the movies are said in many of the trailers. So, when writing our script, we made it a concise and short dialogue.

CONSTRUCTION: ELEVATOR SCENES

 CONSTRUCTION: ELEVATOR SCENES

In school Shooting: Elevator

We are particularly pleased with the framing of this particular shot to show the evaluator is in line with the positioning Tom holding the cardboard box. I (the camera operator) set up this shot, very carefully. In order to position Tom in the centre of the frame, but trapped between tall/high walls, on the one hand and an elevator with iron bars that resemble a prison cell on the other. This connotes the path he is going towards/down (criminal, unhappy behaviour he is going down). Tom had the idea of using intensely angry and sad facial expressions to show the characters feelings about just being fired.

The second scene we shot, was Tom being in the evaluator and me outside filming him going down. However, we encounter a lighting issue: which was that in the elevator there was only one light above Tom and the camera could not see his whole body in the frame. To solve this issue, I stood further away with the camera so we had outside lighting as well as the lighting inside the elevator. This created a clear balance of both lighting when I was moving the camera to pan down Tom (the main character).

CONSTRUCTION: FILMING ON THE SET

CONSTRUCTION: FILMING, WOODLAND AREA

Myself and Tom, both completed film shoots outside of school during the holidays. We filmed the main scenes from our storyboard. The main scenes consisted of chase scenes: where the main character runs through the narrowed pathed, isolated woodsThe main scenes consisted of chase scenes: where the main character runs through the narrowed pathed, isolated woods. With some shots having trees, closing inwards as here is quickly running away from is problems that are rapidly coming towards him. The reason we chose this particular scenery/location is because we wanted to find a woodland area that was completely isolated, and empty from the outside world (where there is the buzz of people, his employees, the world around him are) and here the people have pushed him “up against the wall” to make him feel empty and worthless. Hence why, we decided to choose a location like this where very few are seen here in the deep ends of the woods and isolated area.

PLANNING: RISK ASSESSMENT

Risk Assessment for Ground Floor: 3 Main Scenes

First Aid: In order to carry out a safe filming session, off-site we bought with us a first aid kit, that included the basic essentials (badges, plasters etc…) in case either one of us had an injury whilst filming.

Weather: In order to avoid injury from the weather (storms, raining), we checked the weather in the set locations in which we were filming, to avoid injuries and any damage to the camera equipment we were using (Canon Camera, Tripod).

Mode of Transport: Preesha, by car to the first off-site location. Tom, walking to first off-site location.

Accommodation: No overnight stay (N/A)

Overall Level of Risk For Production: We only risk assessed the three main scene as the majority of our filming took place on-site all in filmed in a safe way. Many of the scenes that were not the running scenes, involved us being at school filming in boardrooms / staff office space or outside on the school grounds where it was safe to do so. The rest of the scenes we filmed, we successful in that everyone on set we’re safe and there was minimal risk involved when filming these particular scenes.

PLANNING: TREATEMENT

PLANNING: TREATMENT
Ground Floor is a film about a man suffering the injustices of society, metaphorically being brought down to level zero by the people her surrounds himself with. The trailer looks to build suspense at this overall frustration towards life building up, accompanied by an interwoven chase scene, which works synonymously to build tension. Bubbling over, the frustration with his circumstance begins to manifest itself within some of narrative as you his rebellious side come out at the very end of the film trailer (his facial expression shows he is ready to fight back the negative/destroying people in his life).

Our Main Inspiration for Ground Floor: The Mass of Men
The Mass of Men, scaffolded and gave us inspiration for out treatment. We were moved by the narrative of the film, and how the audience are positioned in such a way we are sympathised with the character/employee who is talked down to and made to feel empty by a patronising and self-important manager

PLANNING: MY TARGET AUDIENCE

PLANNING: MY TARGET AUDIENCE

A target audience is the specific audience group a media text is aimed at. In order to plan my target audience. I would need to have a clear distinction/definition of the age group and sex/gender of who the targeted audience for my film (brand) are.

I looked to see how other brands defined their specific audiences. The brands I researched and investigated included: Bauer Media, MNE  (New Musical Express) and Empire. By researching these brands it has helped me with my own audience profile. I then continued to complete my own audience profile.

My target audience are ages: 18-40. Skewed slightly more towards male gender.

1. Who is my primary target audience?

18-40. Skewed slightly more towards male gender.

2. What kind of films and television are they likely to prefer?

- Actions/Drama Genres

- Films would include: James Bond 007, Baby Driver, American Sniper and Speed. As they are of similar genre and characters who have lost their jobs and are being looked down at in their workplace by corporate employees who think highly of themselves. Or the films are similar in the sene that the pace and speed are similar. Fast chasing scenes in films like: James Bond and Speed to show suspense and anticipation

3. What platforms do they choose to watch films and where are they likely to see information about films?

Our audience would prefer to watch their films on two platforms. Going into the cinema, for example The Everyman. This is because they would most likely be of a similar working life.

4. What brands do they prefer?

CLOTHING BRANDS

The corporate employees, that work within the firm prefer high end designer brands. In contrast to the main character who looses his job, thus making him shop and high street brand names such as: H&M, or Sports Direct

SOCIAL MEDIA BRANDS

Linked In, Facebook/Meta and Twitter. I/We choose these social media site because many of the characters work in corporate firm, where they will be using promotional, and networking sites to communicate and build relationships with one another. However, the main character in our film does not believe in any of the new up and coming site that these large corporate firms are using. This is a reason why he feels so isolated at work, because nobody has the same view as him. Thus leading to him, eventually leaving the firm because his boss does not see him as does not seem him as a competent, corporate or a team player. He does not attribute to the team but the rest of the cast/corporate employee who are using social media platforms/sites.

5. What makes my film stand out from the competition?

What makes my film, stand out from the competition is that the main character at fights back and comes back even stronger. He has many people in his life, that do not believe in this ability to be successful in his work or personal life. And at the end of the trailer the audience gets to see this other stronger, brutal side to himself. Where he will prove everyone wrong, and build his empire.

. Why should my audience watch my film?

The audience would watch the films at film festivals across the country. For example: Edinburgh Film Festival or The BFI London Film Festival. As well as arthouse cinemas such as Curzon Cinemas or The Everyman.
