POSTER PULP FICTION
ReplyDeleteYour choice is rich in visual symbols and is a piece of movie history.
You pick up on the visual codes that achieve the look of a magazine / comic book cover, and note the gun with its connotations of casual violence, which holds life ‘cheap’- deliberately shocking (typically Tarantino). You comment on how the centre of visual interest is dominated by Uma Thurman, mysterious and powerful. You could also mention her black stilettoes, scarlet lipstick and décolletage: she is a real vamp, mysteriously reading her copy of ‘Pulp Fiction’ The poster is like an in-joke.
POSTER THE BREAKFAST CLUB
ReplyDeleteThe visual codes of the design signal clearly the ‘coming of age’ genre of this film featuring a disparate group of teens brought together for ‘the breakfast club’. You pick up on the body language that suggest friction between them (none are interacting, but all are forced to group together) and you briefly refer to ‘outfits appropriate to age and status of the characters’ but to improve, you could be more specific: the hints are there in the unusually long tag line that refers to ‘the brain, the beauty, the jock and the recluse’. How are these characters differentiated? How are the stereotypes? Who is the target audience for this film?
POSTER MAMMA MIA!
ReplyDeleteYou show good understanding of how the romantic, comic and ‘feelgood’ qualities of this film are conveyed in the poster, along with how the centre of visual interest is dominated by Streep as the mother who aims to obstruct some revelations from emerging. You note genre conventions (billing block, star talent, tagline).
To improve: the setting, in addition to the sea, frames the group (like an alternative wedding photo) with a typical Greek white-washed building covered in bougainvillea -very much a summer movie.
You have given a full account of the design decisions behind the development of the final design of your film poster. The resulting product is based on the genre research into film posters as well as your deconstruction of three specific examples. The finished result shows clear evidence of confident use of poster genre conventions such as an interesting title font to brand the production, an apt tagline, appropriate billing block, release date, social media and name of main talent. The most arresting part of the poster is the artwork, achieved in Photoshop, and connoting the man's interior struggle and flight.
